Transmission line inspections are essential in ensuring grid reliability and resilience. They are generally performed by manned helicopters or by a ground crew. Data may be collected with cameras and analyzed to detect a variety of conditions including corrosion, evidence of flash over, cracks in cross arms, and right-of-way issues such as vegetation encroachment. Inspections every year or 18 months are mandated by NERC in North America and are not optional.
Alex explained to me that Aeriosense provides a complete visual inspection of pylons and poles, cables, and right of way including vegetation encroachment using a UAS typically with a photo camera. Examples of the types of problems that can be identified include broken strands in lines crossing canyons and rivers, corrosion on insulators and other equipment, evidence of flash over, cracks in cross arms, and problems in the right of way such as human or vegetation encroachment. Aeriosense also conducts inspections as part of storm response to identify damage resulting from extreme weather conditions.

The major inhibitor to broader use of ground penetrating radar for detecting the location of underground utilities is the difficulty in interpreting radar scans. The Technology Report Technology Advancements and Gaps in Underground Safety published by the Common Ground Alliance in 2018 identified "User-friendly GPR system to deploy for helping construction crews avoid utilities" as an important gap. In September 2019 at Intergeo Leica Geosystems released the DSX ground penetrating radar system that is the first to address this gap in a compact, portable system. The DSX system includes analytic software DXplore enabling GPR to be used productively without a trained geotechnics specialist by utility repair and maintenance, civil engineering and surveying companies.

Companies are recognizing the benefits of an integrated geospatial and building information modeling (BIM) approach to design and construction. I blogged about the winner of the Year in Infrastructure 2019 award who applied BIM processes and reality modeling on a brownfield substation expansion project. The integrated approach enabled the organization to cut design time, minimize site visits, reduce land requirement and material waste, and, most importantly, eliminate change orders during construction.
Markets and Markets has just released a report Underground Utility Mapping Market Global Forecast To 2024 in which it is estimated that the 2019 market size for underground utility mapping, which refers to a complete detection, processing/post-processing and visualization solution, to be US$ 842 million and growing at an annual rate of 11% (CAGR) expecting it to reach US$1.4 billion by 2024. Currently underground utility mapping is estimated to represent over 15% of the underground utility locate market but it is forecasted to be growing significantly faster, 11% vs 6% CAGR. These estimates are stated to be conservative.
